One of the most popular participation sports in the world, carp fishing is a great way of enjoying your time with nature, and is also an excellent opportunity for some bonding between father (or mother) and the kids. It’s a relaxing pursuit, and one that takes some skills that are useful to learn, and you also need the right kit. Indeed, the quality of your kit determines how successful you may be, so we’re going to look at one of the most important and basic items of your fishing kit – the line.

How It Works

Before we go on to look in detail at the top 10 best choices on the market, here’s a brief explanation of the different types of line available.

Fluorocarbon This are the most common type of fishing line. Fluorocarbon consists of fluorine which is chemically bonded to carbon. This combination makes these lines heavier than the water which enables them to sink well.

Monofilament – this type of fishing line is made from a single strand of nylon. They are quality lines and have been around a long time.

Braid/microfilament – This type of line is made from a combination of high molecular polyethylene which is commonly known as braided line or braid.

So, without any further ado, here’s our review of the top 10 carp fishing lines on the market right now.

The Top 10 best carp fishing lines

1: NGT Carp and Coarse Fishing Line

Over time, you will find a line that is to your satisfaction, and as with many products, will probably stick with that brand as you are happy with its performance. It pays, however, to try out different lines before settling on the one you want, as there are surprising differences between some of them. This one, from NGT – who have a good range of fishing products – is a camo coloured line so will not be too visible in the water.

It’s a 0.2mm line that offers excellent resistance to abrasion, is easy to load and use, and comes in 8lb to 15lb forms so you have plenty of choice. All in all, it’s a good line from a known brand, and at between £6 and £8 is very good value.

We stay with NGT for the second of our choices; this is the Duracast range – a tried and tested line that is favoured by many anglers – and it is very impressive in many ways. This very strong mono type line is the latest in the range, and offers excellent performance. It is coloured brown for best use, and you can choose from anywhere between 4lb and 15lb strength, whichever you prefer.

This one comes in a series of very sensibly priced bulk reels – anywhere up to 3500m for excellent versatility – and is very hard-wearing, and can be used in all circumstances with great success. We can’t stress too strongly how good NGT are when it comes to line, and at much less than a tenner these reels are very good value if a mono line is your thing.

Important Features to Consider

Tensile strength – This is the strength of the line, given by a rating (in this review between 4lb and 80lb) so check the line you need for the given job.

Abrasion resistant – This ensures that the product can resist wear and tear. Regarding fishing, this refers to the ability of your fishing line to avoid damage when it gets into contact with sharp rocks underwater.

Visibility –A good fishing line should not be visible to the fish, and this ensures that you will have a more successful catch. There are various options to consider.

So, that’s our list, now all that remains is to wrap it up!

Let’s Wrap It Up!

As we have said, choosing the right line is about knowing what you want personally, so it’s difficult to recommend one out of the above ten. All we will say is that they are all known, proven brands, so make your choice based on the price and strength rating that you need, and you can’t go wrong!
