Cooking is all the rage right now. You can’t turn on the television without finding a prime time cooking show, celebrity chefs have become superstars, and it’s the in thing to have a trendy kitchen with all the mod-cons. Men and women alike have embraced cooking as not just a hobby but a part of their lives, and let’s be honest, there’s nothing wrong with a nicely cooked, well-presented healthy meal.
Whether you cook for the family or just for yourself, or you are keen on making a nice meal for two to share with your other half, you probably have a great selection of kitchen implements to do the job. No chef, for example, is complete without a decent set of knives. You might also have mixing bowls, various cutlery, electric mixers and more – but what about those other items that make life easier, and also add to the enjoyment of not only making your meal taste great, but look good too.
Don’t miss: Best onion cutters
One such is the mandoline slicer, a small yet very useful item that is becoming very popular indeed. Cheap and very useful, they come in a variety of styles and sizes, so before we go on to tell you about 10 of the best mandoline slicers, let’s have a quick look at what a mandoline slicer does, and why you need one.
Best Mandoline Slicer
1: OXO Good Grips Slicer
Our first choice is a typical mandoline slicer in every way, and makes for a good place to start our list. It’s neat, simple and compact, and offers you everything you need in one of these devices. You get a plastic slicer with a metal blade that is suitably sharp, and that can be adjusted via a simple knob on the top to three different thicknesses. It has a clear surface so you can easily see the slices below, and it is simple to use and effective.
The design is protective of the hands, and it can be used over a bowl, on a cutting board or on any other surface. It cuts evenly and can be used with everything from potato to apple to cucumber, and even softer fruits such as tomato if handled with care. It also has a non-slip design for even better use. It’s sensibly priced, too, so one for the shortlist.

- Three thicknesses
- Sharp blade
- Non-slip
2: Godmorn Slicer Grater
This is a neat model in that it offers you greater versatility than the one above. How does it do this? Put simply, it’s not just a mandoline slicer, it’s a grater too, and comes with no fewer that five interchangeable blades for your choice of cut and style. You get the simple straight blade, plus others for different thicknesses, as well as a blade for crinkle cut and one that acts as a grating tool.
There is ample protection for the fingers, and it is easy to use and made from durable materials, plus it has anti-slip functions so you can keep it steady when slicing. The blades are stainless steel and the entire item comes apart so is easy to wash, it is compact enough to store away without taking up a lot of space, and it is a very nice device that will be much-used by the avid cook. It may not be as easy to adjust the thickness as the above model, but it does so much more and is very cheap for what it is.

The set comes with no fewer than six inserts that you attach quickly and easily to the v-section. The inserts allow you to cut to five different thicknesses – from as little as 1.5mm to 7mm – and you also get a grating insert for added effectiveness. It is non-slip for safety, is designed to rinse clean easily, and also comes with a handy sleeve into which the inserts can be stored when not in use, and a cleaning brush. Not the cheapest, but great quality and excellent design, and not at all expensive.

5: Syolee Mandolin Slicer
This is one for anyone on a budget who wants a decent slicer at a very cheap price, that does plenty more than just slice and julienne. It’s not the best quality of those on our list, it’s made from plastic, but it is very cheap and offers a wide variety of functions. What is clever is that the blades – there are five of them that you can change as you wish – can be stored inside the body when not in use, which aids safety and saves space.
With this one you get blades for cutting 1.5mm and 2.5mm slices, 2mm and 3mm julienne, and also a wavy blade for those crinkle cut slices that look great on the plate. The blades are very simple to change and everything can be washed with ease. It has a non-slip base and finger protection, and also comes with grating and shredding fitments. All in all, it’s a nice model if you want something cheap – and it is certainly very well-priced.

6: Prima Stainless Steel Slicer
This is a simple yet effective mandoline slicer that you can have for a surprisingly affordable price. Indeed, given what you get with this one, we think the price is quite amazing. It’s an adjustable model so you get a flat plane with a blade built-in, and it is adjustable throughout the range via a simple control knob on the side of the device. It’s a plastic body with stainless steel blades, which is the usual construction for most of these.
This one can offer you a selection of slicing thicknesses – from 3mm to 9mm thickness – and can offer julienne slicing across thicknesses from 0.75mm to 9mm, which is a wide range. It is very easy to adjust, has non-slip feet and is compact when not in use. Easy to use and easy to wash, and very effective, we think this one a must for your shortlist if what you need is a simple and cheap mandoline slicer – it’s very hard to beat at the price.

9: Tower Health T80413
This is a nice model from a known brand, and one that comes complete with a variety of features that make it a cut above some of those on the list. It offers a full range of options – you can slice, julienne, and cube across a range of thicknesses from 1mm to 9mm, and it does so using the adjustable fixed-blade method rather than you having to switch blades around for the full effect. As such it is easy to use, and versatile too.
The body is strong plastic and is clearly of a greater quality to many on the list, while the stainless steel blades are suitably sharp and durable. The control knobs for adjusting the thickness are easy to use and accessible, and non-slip feet mean it is safe to use on all surfaces. 10: Andrew James Electric Mandoline Slicer
Our final choice is very different from all the rest in that it is an electric device. This one comes from the renowned Andrew James range of kitchen utensils and is very impressive. If you want an electric version it’s the only one we featured, and it is good. It comes with three blades for the various slicing elements you require, and can even do French Fries, and is very easy to use. You do, of course, need a mains socket to use it.
All you do is fit the required blade – it’s a very simple procedure – and drop the vegetables into the machine, press the button and it does the job for you with no effort required. It’s quick, effective and they also provide an ice shaving fitment so you can make great drinks and smoothies too. It is well worth looking at, and not at all expensive when compared with some of the manual ones.

That’s our list of the top 10 best mandoline slicers on the market right now, but which one is for you? Let’s see if we can give you a verdict!
How it Works
The French have a lot to answer for when it comes to innovative and fun kitchen appliances, and the mandoline slicer has its roots in French cuisine. If you want to get the julienne effect from your vegetables – and who doesn’t – then this is what you need. The slicer consists of a flat surface along which you slide the item you need to cut. It is cut by a blade, which is parallel to that surface and which is adjustable in height. Thus, you can choose how thin you want your vegetables cut!
They have an element of protection built in so you don’t end up with fingers a la julienne, and there are some that come with vertical blades and also with curved blades for the crinkle-cut effect. They are excellent for when you want to make very thin potato crisps, for example, or other fried, cooked or raw vegetables to be presented as you wish.
Don't miss: Potato peelers
Do you need the best mandoline slicer? You know you do, and that’s why we have looked at then of the best on the market, and we guarantee there will be one here for your needs and easily within your budget.
Our Choice
Usually we would give you a run-down of the features to look for, but with one of these you want to be able to slice your fruit and veg, and that’s about it! There are two main types of mandoline slicer in our list – plus one electric model – and they are the adjustable version and those with changeable blades.
If you are looking for an adjustable model, we suggest that you check out the Chef’s Inspirations model, number four on the list, as it is good quality, and offers all the features you want from one of these. Likewise, if you are looking for one with changeable blades, the other model from the same brand – at number three on the list – is also recommended. If you want a budget slicer that does the job, then the Prima model does a cheap and cheerful job for merely a few pounds. To go the whole hog, the Andrew James electric model is the one to look for, but to be honest we reckon any of the manually operated versions will do just as good a job.
So, choose the best mandoline slicer from our list, and enjoy healthy, good looking fruit and veg cut as you want them!
