For many of us, keeping fit is part of our life and daily routine. A healthy body, so they say, means a healthy mind, so keeping our bodies in trim certainly helps us to tackle the daily grind that is work and home life. It’s also something that many people enjoy – even exercising every now and again can have great benefits – and there are now many workplaces, especially office blocks, with fitness centres built in.

If you’re lucky enough to have a gym in the workplace then you can save a great deal of money, as gym memberships are not cheap! Indeed, it’s estimated that many millions of pounds worth of gym memberships go unused in the UK every year, as people turn up for the first few sessions then simply don’t bother any more. That’s all to do with our busy life schedules, too; getting to and from the gym, and finding the time to do it, is something that can become a chore.

What’s the answer? Get a gym in the home! OK, we know that nobody can afford to have all the top class equipment at their gym brought into the house, and there’s probably no room for it all anyway, but what you can do is install a pull up station. You will have used one of these before; they are compact enough to take up little space, they can be used for a variety of exercises, and – as you’re about to find out when you read our reviews – they are not expensive at all. Before we give you more details of the top 10, here’s a brief explanation of what they are about, and why you need one.

The Top 10

1: Bodymax CF360 Deluxe

Our first example is from Bodymax, a brand with a wide choice of fitness products, and it is a typical pull up station in every way. Made from a strong and very durable tubular steel construction, it comes with all the fittings you need for a full pull up exercise system, and while it does need putting together it is very simple to do. All the bolts and fittings are included, as well as a full set of instructions that are easy to follow.

It is well upholstered in the handles and other areas for comfort while in use, has a maximum weight capacity of 135kg, and it is surprisingly compact when constructed so will fit easily in a spare room, garage or other space where you wish to use it. You can perform the full range of sit ups, pull ups and more using this very versatile item, and we reckon that at the price – which is mid-range for one of these – it’s certainly worthy of a second look.

Key Features
  • 135kg capacity
  • steel tubular
  • easy to set up
  • full range of exercises

2: York Fitness Workout Tower

One of the benefits of a pull up station such as this one, and most on this list, is that they are designed to be free-standing. There is no need to fix them in a permanent space, so if you find the position you pick initially is not suitable, you can easily move it around. This one from York is very similar to the above – in fact, such is the nature of the item there will be few differences between them – and is also made from strong tubular steel.

This one comes with upholstery so you get the added comfort when performing pull ups, sit ups and many more routines that you can perform on this station. It also features base peg press up handles so you can perform off the floor exercise too. It does need putting together but it is very simple to do, and while you need enough clear space to allow you to indulge in your exercises, you will find it does not take up a great deal of space. This one is a competitive price within this list.

Key Features
  • Tubular steel
  • Off the floor push up pegs
  • Free standing
  • Easy to set up

3: Mirafit VKR Multifunction Gym Tower

We are seeing the similarities very clearly between each one of our pull up stations, but that is no surprise. This is a piece of equipment designed for a specific use, so it follows that all of the manufacturers will produce something of a similar ilk. Mirafit, another brand with a large range, offers this impressive pull up station, and it does everything you want it to do. It’s made from very thick and strong steel tubing and can handle a maximum weight of 150kg.

This one offers all the usual options – sit ups, knee raises, pull ups and more – and comes with upholstered handles for the added comfort. It’s easy to put together and all the fittings are included – although it’s worth noting that, as with most of these, the tools to construct it are not included – and when built measures 219cm high and 133cm deep, with a width of 89cm; that should give you a good idea of the sort of space you need to install one of these. It’s a very good price, and worth putting on a short list.

Key Features
  • tubular steel
  • 219cmx133cm
  • 150kg capacity
  • upholstered

4: Gravity Fitness Portable

This interesting take on the pull up bars theme may be perfect for anyone who has very limited space in the home, or who travels a lot. That’s because it’s a portable pull up station. By that we mean it is designed to be very simple to put together and take apart – it’s all slot together function and takes about two minutes either way – and comes with a carry bag, so if you spend a lot of time in hotels, you could keep this in the boot of your car and use it in your room.

As a portable item it’s not as versatile as some in terms of the exercises it can accommodate, yet will easily allow you to perform pull ups, dips, press ups, leg raises and more, and it has a maximum width of 116cm so is not too large. It weighs 19kg – that’s quite a bit to carry but still portable – and can accommodate up to 110kg in weight, so is still good enough for most. If you need a pull up station you can move around with you, it’s worth considering, and at a sensible price.

Key Features
  • Portable
  • 2 minutes to erect
  • Carry bag
  • 110kg capacity

5: Multi Function Pull Up

Although an unbranded product, this one has some very interesting credentials. Granted, it’s one of the more simple and basic designs here – it is, essentially, just a pull up bar on a frame – but given that it is constructed from very strong steel, and is designed for professional as well as domestic use, it will certainly fit the bill if pull ups are what you need. It comes with an adjustable height feature so can be used by anyone, and can be extended up to 240cm.

Where this one does appeal is that it can handle as much as 280kg capacity. That is considerably more than most of the items on this list, and should accommodate just about anybody. It’s easy to put together and does not take long, and is compact enough to fit in a smaller room, as long as you have the space to move around it. This may not offer as much versatility as some, but it’s a very tough and very strong device.

Key Features
  • Up to 240cm height
  • 280kg capacity
  • Professional standard
  • Simple pull up station

6: Hardcastle Power Tower

This model, which comes from the extensive range of Hardcastle bodybuilding and fitness equipment, is a well specified design that will be perfect for anyone on a budget, as it comes at what can only be described as a very impressive price. It’s not for those who are extra-heavy as it has a maximum capacity of 120kg, but it is a full pull up tower so you can perform pull ups, sit ups, leg raises, and all manner of exercises that you want in your home gym.

This one measures 214cm in height and you need a space 106cm deep and 102cm to site it, plus the space around for you to move. It’s easy to put together – assembly is required but it’s easy and will take just a few minutes – and it is finished in white, which makes a change from the usual black. If you want a decent piece of equipment that is not going to break the bank, you can find this one with plenty of change from eighty quid, so it’s worth checking out.

Key Features
  • Up to 120kg
  • Easy to assemble
  • Full range of functions

7: Mirafit Power Tower

Our second model from the Mirafit range is this one, and it’s a full scale gym tower that allows you to access a wide range of exercises including pull ups, sit ups, knee bends and more, and it’s a very compact frame too, as unlike most of the others it’s an all-in-one package rather than a stand-up frame. It features central arms that you can slide out of the way when not in use – a nice touch of design – and is finished in orange and black.

In fact, we reckon this one will be perfect for the home gym; it has a maximum load of 120kg, but that should be enough for the average person and family, and it is compact enough to fit in even a small spare room. It will need assembly but is very simple to put together, and once assembled this free-standing item will be very well used as it is practical and versatile. The one thing we will say is that among these it is one of the more expensive models, but not by so much as to price itself out of the market.

Key Features
  • Folding arms
  • Fully functioning
  • 120kg capacity

8: UK Fitness Power Tower

Very similar in design and capability to that listed above is this one, from UK Fitness. It’s a full scale gym tower that allows you to access a wide range of exercises including pull ups, sit ups, knee bends and more, and it’s a very compact frame too, as the above it’s an all-in-one package rather than a stand-up frame. It will fit in a suitably small space in a spare room or garage and provide plenty of versatility and usage.

It has a maximum load of 125kg, but that should be enough for the average person and family, and it is compact enough to fit in even a small spare room. It will need assembly but is very simple to put together, and once assembled this free-standing item will be very well used as it is practical and versatile. Also, compared to the almost identical model that we have already reviewed, this one is surprisingly well-priced so certainly worth a second look.

Key Features
  • Foldable arms
  • 125kg capacity
  • Full work out facility
  • Easy assembly

9: Hardcastle Black Pull up Station

We have already reviewed one model from Hardcastle, and this one is the same item, except finished in black rather than white. It is a well specified design that will be perfect for anyone on a budget, as it comes at what can only be described as a very impressive price.

If you want a decent piece of equipment that is not going to break the bank, this one fits the bill perfectly.

Key Features
  • Up to 120kg
  • Compact
  • Easy to assemble
  • Full range of functions

10: Hardcastle Pull Up and Dip Tower

Another model from the Hardcastle range, this one is very similar to the other two and is a very neat design with all the functions that you could need, and also comes at a price that is certainly impressive in this company.

We can only conclude that this is the brand to go to for decent quality exercise equipment at a price that you can afford.

Key Features
  • Up to 120kg
  • Easy to assemble
  • Full range of functions

That’s our list of the top 10 pull up stations that may be suitable for your home gym, so is there one here that will fit the bill for you? We believe we have covered the market pretty well, so before we go on to give you our verdict, let’s consider the features you need to look for when choosing one of these.

How It Works

Why start with a pull up station? Because it’s an affordable, versatile piece of equipment that you can easily fit into, for example, a spare room or – if you have such – a garage that you want to use as a gym. They are easy to put together, and you can do a range of exercises – pull ups, chin ups, sit ups, dips, knee raises and more – that help with different parts of the body.

Usually constructed from sturdy metal tubing and with adjustable spaces for the bars and other accessories – meaning all the family can indulge and keep fit – pull up bars are an essential part of your home gym, so even if you are looking at other items, you need a set in your home.

We have taken a close look at ten of the best models on the market, from a variety of manufacturers and all with decent credentials and satisfactory customer reviews, so here are the top 10 pull up bars that you can buy for your home gym.

Important Features to Consider

In many of our reviews we would give you a list of functions and features that you should be looking at, but with these pull up stations there are really only a couple of differentiating attributes, as all are designed to do the same thing – provide equipment for you to perform pull ups, sit ups, chin ups and more in your own home. The two factors to consider, as all are around the same size and occupy similar space, are these: weight capacity, and cost. The average weight capacity of these is around 120-150kg, but there are a couple that offer more. The price differential ranges between around £70 to over £150, so is worth looking at. Let’s see if we can recommend one for your home gym.

Let’s Wrap It Up!

It’s a choice that you want to take time over, as this is a piece of equipment that will be used by all the family, hopefully on a regular basis! Every one of the pull up stations we have included on our list is worthy of being there, as all of these offer an excellent opportunity to be able to follow a stringent and practical exercise routine in the home.

We will say, however, that at the price – and they are the least expensive of those here – the three models from the Hardcastle range provide excellent capability at very sensible prices, so we recommend you check them out further. They do only handle 120kg, so if you need greater then you should consider the Mirafit model at number 3, which can take 150kg, or for very heavy duty, number 5, which can handle a mighty 280kg.

That’s our review of the top 10 pull up stations complete and we hope we have helped you find one that will suit your home gym, and helped you and your family on the road to health and fitness and cost savings.
