There’s something about cars that fascinate kids, and not just boys! Fast cars, off-road vehicles, police cars and such are all a subject of interest to youngsters, and there’s little doubt every schoolboy had or has a picture of the latest Porsche or Ferrari om the bedroom wall. Ever since cars were invented they have been part of daily life, and the more exotic and wonderful, the better.

Of course, kids can’t drive cars, but they can have a radio controlled model of their favourite supercar, monster truck or other vehicle. It used to be the case that a remote control car was attached to the handset by an electrical cord. These days, even the most basic of remote vehicles are truly remote – that is, they are controlled by a radio frequency handset, and they are great fun!

The great thing about radio controlled cars is that they provide a great deal of fun at inexpensive prices, and we have no doubt at all that dad will want a go! Some are more sophisticated than others, and there are some very impressive models on the market, so before we go on to give you our choice of the top 10 radio controlled cars for kids, let’s have a little more about what you can expect, and why you really need one!

How It Works

The things is, radio frequency operations are all around us these days, and we use these systems in daily life without thinking. Wen it comes to radio controlled cars – and other vehicles such as aircraft and drones – they will have their own frequency allotted, so they do not interfere with other systems. This is important, as interference from other quarters can be a safety issue, so it is important that you by only an officially sanctioned model, and all of those on our list comply with the required regulations.

The concept is simple and needs little explanations; You get a car or other vehicle, and a handset, and from the handset you control certain functions. Depending on the car this will be forward, backwards, left and right, and there may be other functions in more sophisticated models. Some designs are intended for off-road use, and come with genuine suspension that does the job on a real car. Some are representations of real supercars, and may be officially licensed by the factory.

We took a look at ten of the best radio controlled cars for kids, with an eye on giving you a good view of the variety and types on offer and also on affordability, so that you can choose the one that suits you.

Important Features to Consider

A radio controlled car is a great toy for the kids, and one that all the family can get some enjoyment out of it, so what do you look for when you are buying one of these? We’ve highlighted a few features you may want to consider:

  • Type – do you want an off-road car, or a model that is simply for flat surface use? Also, do you want one that looks like a real car, or is that not important? There are examples of each here, so you have plenty of choice.
  • Battery or Rechargeable – some of our examples are battery powered so you will need to replace them regularly. Others have in-built rechargeable battery packs, so you save money that way. Again, it’s a choice up to you.
  • Run Time – how long do you get from one full charge? It’s an important question and one your kids will want to answer too, so check the specs for the best performance.
  • Stunts – do you want one that does stunts? If so, you have plenty of choice among the models we have chosen, so have a look and see which is for you.

That’s a few of the points you need to consider and there may be more that you hold as important, so which of the 10 is for you? Let’s see if we can wrap things up!

Let’s Wrap It Up!

So you want a radio controlled car for your kids, or for you! Which one suits you best? We thought we’d look at this from two angles: if you want a replica model of a real car, we recommended the Lamborghini Aventador as it is a stunning model and very cheap, and also good fun.

But, it’s not as much fun as a car that you can drive up and down rocky hills, over sand on the beach, or through any form of rough terrain. That, believe us, is a lot more fun, and there are a few models on this list that fit the bill. We especially like the MaxTronic Monster Truck, number 8 on the list, as it is a good size, is well made and comes with great performance at an excellent price, so read through again and see if you can find the model that is right for you, and enjoy many hours of fun with you and your kids.
