There are some things in life that we do simply because of the challenge; extreme and exciting sports and pursuits spring to mind, and it is surprising how many people put themselves in genuine danger for a thrill. Of course, whatever sport you are involved in you will take the necessary safety measures to minimise any possible chance of injury, but knowing there is just that essence of a risk is part of the excitement. There are also many accessories in every sport that can help you get the best out of your involvement, and we are talking about one of those in this review.

For rock climbers, gymnasts, weightlifters and more, chalk is an essential accessory. It helps with grip and can give you a competitive advantage. The chalk that sportsmen use is magnesium carbonate, and it is readily available. The problem is that you need to carry your chalk on your person – this is especially so when it comes to rock climbing – so we need to take a look at the humble chalk bag! These handy devices clip onto your belt so you can dip in and chalk your hands when necessary, and they are absolutely essential.
Now, you might think that a chalk bag is a chalk bag, and to an extent, you would be right! However, we were surprised to find there are many detail differences in the various models on offer, and there is plenty of choice in terms of size and price, too. Before we go on to review our top 10 best chalk bags, let’s just have a closer look at why it’s necessary, and what it’s all about.

Best Chalk Bags
So, let’s begin with this: what is there to say about something as simple as a chalk bag? Well, surprisingly, quite a lot! These things come in many different shapes and sizes, and the opening one – the Premium SBX – is an excellent one to begin with. It is just about the right size to be perfect for rock climbing: not too cumbersome and yet big enough to be easy to find in awkward positions. It is a quality item that is made from durable yet lightweight material, and comes with a waist strap for ease of use.
You also get a zip pocket for carrying items – it could even be used as a carry bag when you are not using it for sports – and it’s finished in an unobtrusive black so it does not draw attention. All in all, this is a premium best chalk bag of the highest quality, and as it comes with a free chalk ball you get the full package, ready to use whenever you want. So, overall, this is a highly recommended choice, and we believe it sets the standard for others to follow. At around £13 it’s also good value, so one for the shortlist.
We always try to be creative when writing these reviews, but with some products it can be difficult to find anything that is fresh and interesting to say! Chalk bags are not, shall we say, the easiest products to review as, primarily, they serve one purpose, and that is to carry chalk and make it easily accessible. This one achieves that, and also comes with a zip pocket. It’s a very nice design – and let’s face it, there’s little chance of innovation – and is well-made.
The Psychi bag comes in a choice of bright and breezy colours – blue, green, orange and purple – and is made from strong and light material, and is fitted with a band for easy attachment. It has a specially designed large aperture for easy access, and is designed for regular use. It also has a built-in brush holder for added convenience, and is a neat model all-round. You don’t get the chalk with this one, but at under £10 it is very good value.
Rock climbing is a very popular pastime in the UK, and there are many places you can go with some extremely challenging climbs to tackle. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber there is always a new challenge, and while not everybody wants to tackle the bigger climbs, you will want to move on to better challenges as you gain experience. You also need the best chalk bag, and this is a rather good one that has some excellent features.
You get a handy zip pocket on the front – perfect for keeping your valuables in when you climb – plus a draw-string opening that is also very practical. There is a waist band for added security, and at 7” high and 5” in diameter, it is not too large and easy to access. The waistband is fully adjustable and has a quick-release buckle, and the bag is made from fully waterproof and durable material. It’s a good model, but does not come with chalk, and as you can find this one for around £10 it’s good value.
We never would have considered a chalk bag as a fashion accessory, but in fact, this one could easily be treated as such. It’s a very stylish design that differs greatly from those we have already mentioned, not list in the way it is finished. It comes in a variety of very jolly and bright patterned designs, but that might not appeal to anyone who wants something more discreet. We like it, however, as it adds a little variety to the choice.
The bag comes with a zip pocket for your ID, watch, jewellery and cash, and is also fitted with a very neat waist band that is fully adjustable. It is a spacious bag, too, and comes also with a brush holder. To appeal further, it’s made from organic cotton, but we are not sure how that would stack up to extreme wet weather. However, it is a very nice best chalk bag, although you have to buy your own chalk, but at around £20 you are paying for the design -and there are cheaper models that do the same job.
There are many ways you can apply chalk to the hands when climbing or performing other activities, but by far the easiest is to use a chalk ball. It’s basically chalk in a perforated bag that you roll across your hands, transferring the chalk as you do. This option, from Elite Sportz, is a full scale set that comes with a classy, well-made bag and two balls of chalk – that’s a very good deal that will last you a long time, no matter how frequently you use it.
This bag has a zip compartment for keys and rings etc, plus a drawstring top for easy closing, and it is a sensible size – not too big to be cumbersome, not too small to be impractical. It’s made from quality material and comes with an adjustable waist band for comfortable use, and is lightweight and durable. In fact, the manufacturer offers a 100% lifetime guarantee, with replacement promised if you are not happy with the item. At around £15 it’s a good price for a complete set, so worth a second look.
As we enter the second half of our review it’s time to reflect on what we’ve learned so far; chalk bags are usually waterproof, some come with chalk balls included, and they are made from durable material. They usually have a draw string closure, and are big enough to be usable but not too big that they will get in the way. They are designed for outdoor use and for long life, and are lightweight so are easy to carry. This one, from Singing Rock – a known rock climbing brand – fits the bill on all of those points, and is a very nice design.
It is a good quality bag made from strong material, and is very durable and easy to use. It’s neat and tidy, and not too big, but doesn’t come with chalk included. The top is easy to open and close, and it comes with a strong hanging tab so you can attach it to your person. That’s about it, really, except to add that you get change from a tenner, so is very good value.
This is a very neat design that appealed to us straight away, thanks in no small fashion to it being presented in a lovely bright blue finish. It’s a quality item, too, from a known brand, and one that serves its purpose well. It has a fully adjustable waist band, with a drawstring opening that can be easily closed, and is made from highly durable and strong material. It’s designed for outdoor use so will last in the most extreme conditions, and is surprisingly light.
Unlike some, this one comes with a chalk ball, and it’s magnesia chalk with no talc; this means it applies easily and offers long lasting effect. It’s in a ball format, too, so is very simple to apply. A fully adjustable waist band means it can be worn by anyone, and it can be used in everything from rock climbing to pole dancing. All in all, it’s a nice package, and at a shade less than £10 it’s sensibly priced, too.
Nearing the end of the line now, and to be honest, it’s beginning to feel as if we’ve said everything there is to say about chalk bags! Or at least we thought we had, until we saw the price of this one – but we’ll come back to that in a moment! So, what’s so special about it? Well, it’s from a known brand, is a quality product, and looks the part. It has the usual draw string top, with a neat and easily accessible opening for getting in and out easily, and it is made from very durable material.
The interior is lined with fleece for added protection, and it comes with an adjustable waist band, plus you get a zip compartment for hiding away your keys and money. So, it’s a nice bag, even if it does not come with chalk, but what was that price? Put it this way – you will get a few pennies change from £80; that’s right, £80! We can’t help feeling this must be a mistake, but that’s what it says, so this one is a write-off!
To be honest, we had to include this one simply for the brand name alone: who couldn’t be impressed with a company called ‘The Friendly Swede’? It’s a good package, too, as you will see. For a start, the chalk bag is a good sized one, a simple design with the usual drawstring top. It comes with an adjustable waist band so can be worn by anyone with comfort, and is made from highly durable and long-life material that makes it very light and easy to use. The interior is fleece-lined, as are the high-quality models, and the exterior waterproof.
So, what else did we like about this one? Well, you’re not buying a chalk bag – you actually get two for the price of one! OK, so there’s no chalk included, but we think that at a price of around £12, this one is very good value indeed. It’s certainly worth looking at if you go climbing with a partner, and is a sensibly designed product all-round.
This very nice chalk bag is ideal for climbing, gymnastics or working out in the gym, and is nicely presented with some clever features. The drawstring closure is effective and easy to use, and the zip pocket on the front is a welcome touch for putting keys, money and anything else that you might want to put away while you’re in action. Made from durable polyester, it measures just 20x14cm so is compact yet usable, and a strap allows it to be work around the waist or attached to a belt.
Finished in black and red, the CampTeck chalk bag has many satisfied users – and at the price which is quite amazing, that’s no surprise – and also features a strong plastic D-ring for attaching to another item. The bag is designed with earphone holes so your MP3 player can drop into the pocket and you can still wear the earphones. It’s unisex so suitable for men or women, and as we said, it’s a great bag at a very decent price.
How it Works
If you are a fan of extreme and exciting sports, then you will know what we mean when we say there is nothing like conquering a difficult climb, or achieving a target you have set yourself in any other sport. There is something exhilarating, for example, about climbing a sheer rock wall, whether you do it alone or with friends, and once you have overcome your fears, you want to try it again and again.
The thing about people is we want to achieve the impossible; man sees a mountain, and wants to climb it. Indeed, the great mountaineer George Mallory, when asked why he wanted to climb Mt Everest, replied ‘because it is there’. It’s a sentiment that applies to many sports, competitive and otherwise, and as we grow through our younger days, each of us is bound to develop an interest in participating in a particular sport. Some of us take it more seriously than others – indeed, some become professionals – but even if you are simply enjoying rock climbing or gymnastics as a hobby, then you need your precious chalk!
How do you use it? It’s as simple as applying the chalk to your hands, and you will find the extra grip to be quite amazing at first. It’s a personal choice whether you use chalk or not – some gymnasts and weightlifters, for example, choose not to – but it does come highly recommended, especially in dangerous pursuits such as rock climbing.
So, let’s get down to business and have a look at the top 10 chalk bags on the market right now, and help you find one that will guide you to better all-round performance.
Important Features to Consider
As we have said, the best chalk bag is a necessity if you are rock climbing and use chalk for grip, and from the ten above we can see that there are definite similarities. So, what is the deciding factor that makes one stand out from another? It’s difficult to say as each of these essentially serves the same purpose, so let’s have a quick recap of the best features that you need to consider when choosing your ideal best chalk bag.
- Size – when involved in active sports you don’t want to be carrying a bag that is going to interfere with your movement, so you need to make sure your bag is big enough to use, but compact enough to stay out of the way. Check the size before you buy, and make sure you get one that fits.
- Durability – most of these are made from specially chosen, very durable material that is both light and strong, so you get value for money for a long time. This is especially important when climbing, as you need a bag that will withstand the elements and not be ripped by rocks.
- Chalk – put simply, some of these come with chalk, some without, so for the best value for money, look for one that includes the chalk balls as part of the package.
- Colour – perhaps not the most important factor, but some of these are finished in bright colours, others in black, so the choice is yours!
That’s just a few of the options that you need to keep an eye out for, so all that remains now is to wrap things up!
