A unicycle (also called a monowheel) is not the first form of transport that comes to mind when we think of the commute, but in fact, there are people who use the latest form of electric unicycles for this very purpose. Why you may ask? Well, they are compact, easy to use, and get you to work quicker! Of course, using an electric monowheel on a pavement in a busy city would be inconsiderate at best, so it’s no surprise that these fun and hugely innovative gadgets are used more for fun than any practical purpose.

Don’t miss: Electric scooters

The unicycle is best-known from the circus. It’s often ridden by acrobats, clowns and other performers, and can be very impressive to watch. Many people have enough trouble balancing a two-wheeled bike, so one wheel is always going to be a problem! In fact, once you master the art, a unicycle is not difficult to ride; it’s about balance, and the most difficult part if getting started.

The beauty of an electric unicycle is that it is powered, so you don’t have to worry about getting it going; you merely have to master the balance. The models we have chosen vary from the innovative to the basic, and all are very neat and interesting devices. There are many reasons why you might want to buy one of these, and they really are great fun. So, before we look at the ten best electric unicycles, a bit about what the best electric unicycle brings to the party, how it works, and why you want one!

Best Electric Unicycles UK – Reviews Of the Top 10

1: Airwheel Q3

We will warn you now that you will be seeing the Airwheel brand name quite regularly. It’s one of the market leaders in the electric unicycle world – that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write – and you can rest assured they make quality products. This is one from their range, the Q3 model, that we thought a great starting point for our reviews. Now, strictly this is not a unicycle, as it has two wheels. However, we think it needs to be included as that very feature makes it extremely easy to ride, and it performs the same task.

The makers say you can learn to ride this one in just 5-minutes, and that it is very simple to ride – made even more so by the side-by-side wheels. It is powered by a 340w Maglev motor – the latest innovation and very quiet – and weighs just 11.5kg so is easy to carry around. It can reach speeds of up to 18km/h – very fast on one of these – and is made from durable materials that will stand the test of time. This is, then, a very neat device at a sensible price for one of these, and a great starting point.

Key Features
  • Twin-wheels
  • 18km/h top speed
  • powerful quiet motor

2: Fastwheel EVA Classic

This model, from Fastwheel, is more in line with the true electric unicycle ideal, in that it features only one wheel. It is, nevertheless, easy to ride, and offers excellent performance at a very competitive price. It’s a neat-looking device that will have all your friends interested, weighs just 9kg, and as it measures only 24x17x47cm approx. is easy to carry around for use in the city or at other destinations.

It is powered by a 132Wh battery, made by renowned electronics giant Samsung for added peace of mind, and is Bluetooth compatible. You can reach speeds of up 20km/h – more than adequate when riding one of these, and potentially very exciting – and lightweight metal wheels give a tilt angle of 18degrees. This model is made from very durable material, is nicely built and will not cost you the earth, and if you want one of these for fun, we reckon it’s fit for the shortlist.

Key Features
  • true unicycle
  • 20km/h
  • 18-degree tilt
  • Up to 120kg capacity

3: Airwheel Q3 Black

This second choice from the Airwheel range is, as far as we can see, the same model as that we began with, but finished in a more sinister black colour scheme. It’s a great design that is very popular, and one with some excellent attributes. Strictly this is not a unicycle, as it has two wheels. However, that is a signature of the Airwheel brand as it has developed this design to make it easier for people to enjoy the experience of riding one of these machines.

Key Features
  • Twin-wheels
  • 18km/h top speed
  • Powerful quiet motor

4: iNMotion V5

The models we have reviewed so far all feature standing operation; you position yourself on the two footrests, and away you go. This one, from iNMotion, is the same; it can be operated using a smartphone app – with which you can set your speed and such – and comes with some interesting innovations. This one has a front and rear light, the rear one doubling as a brake light, and is made from very strong materials to a high standard of build quality.

This model can take you up to 25km/h; that is very fast, believe us, on a device of this sort! It weighs less that 12kg so is easy to transport, and is suitably compact, and it will take 3-hours to get to full charge on the battery. With a 550W motor, you will get as much as 30km from a full charge. The 14-inch wheels are larger than on some models and aid balance, while the 18-degree tilt angle is perfectly standard. All in all, a very nice unicycle, if you are prepared to pay a little more for some innovative touches.

Key Features
  • 550w motor
  • 18-degree tilt
  • 30km range
  • 25km/h speed

5: Airwheel Q6 Ultimate

We have already looked at a couple from the Airwave range, and this one – the Q6 Ultimate – is another of the twin-wheel design that has become their forte. It’s a very neat model that comes with some fun additions such as LED lights and a handy kickstand, and its made with the usual high-quality attention to detail that you expect from the brand. Easy to ride and simple to learn how to use, this is one that will be fun for all the family.

This model comes with a more powerful motor than the Q3 models we have already reviewed, and is superbly designed give great commuting capability and ease of use. The simple operation of the Airwheel range is part of the appeal, and one of the reasons why this is among the most popular of this type of device on the market today. It’s great for when walking the dogs, going to the shops, or just having fun, and is a great price compared to some of the competition.

Key Features
  • Twin-wheel
  • Stability
  • Powerful

6: Wheelo Scooter Unicycle

Now for something very different! This unicycle, from Wheelo, is a brilliant design, but before we tell you about it, be aware it is much more expensive than many others on this list. That’s because, by and large, it’s a very impressive model with some fine innovations – not least the fact you sit down to drive it. It is built to a very high quality, is superbly designed, and while you can accelerate and brake by moving your body forwards or backwards slightly, it also comes with a very handy manual brake on the handlebar.

Using the Bluetooth link you can control several aspects of the unicycle via your smartphone, including driving position, and it is powerful enough to climb hills with ease. A powerful motor gives it more than capable speed, but perhaps the most impressive aspect is a full charge can take you as far as 50km – that’s a useful range indeed. This is a quality machine that is, in many ways, in a different class from some of the others on the list, but it is also in a notably different price bracket, too.

Key Features
  • Seated riding
  • Controlled by movement
  • Emergency brake
  • Bluetooth

7: Beeper Road R1

This electric unicycle is one that is designed to get the kids involved. It’s recommended for children of 7-years and upwards, and cleverly comes with a set of stabilisers so that they can practice balancing before going to one-wheel use. That’s not to say it’s not for adults – it’s perfectly usable by anyone – but there are more serious models with better performance that might suit and appeal to older users.

You get a very nicely-built unicycle with all the usual features, plus it weighs just 10kg and is very compact in size, so is easy to transport. It’s easy to ride – you’ll be on one wheel before you know it – and offers a range of around 20km. Top speed is just 7km/h, which is ideal for kids but will leave adult users wanting something more. Nevertheless, it’s good, and is a quality item, although we feel there are perhaps better models to consider at a similar price.

Key Features
  • Great for 7-years and up
  • Stabilisers
  • Low top speed

8: iNMotion V3

Along with Airwheel, iNMotion offers the largest range of electric unicycles on the market. We have already included one of their models on the list, and this one – the V3 Pro – is an equally good device at a sensible price. It offers you easy riding, is great for learners and has some decent innovations, and is finished in a fetching black and yellow scheme that will certainly make it stand out from the crowd. It’s made from durable materials, too, so will withstand the usual knocks and bangs it will undoubtedly be party to.

This one is a double-wheel model, which makes it great for starters, and the 450W motor is powerful enough to send it to 18km/h, which is more than enough if you are not used to riding a unicycle. One charge will get you up to 25km, and it has an extendable carry-handle for ease of transport. It’s also very compact, and weighs under 14kg so is not at all heavy. It will charge in one and a half hours, has 14-inch wheels, and can handle up to 120kg in weight, and is a decent all-round machine in its class.

Key Features
  • Twin wheels
  • Great for beginners
  • 25km range
  • 18km/h top speed

9: NINEBOT One c+

We have included this model for a couple of reasons – it is one of the best-selling electric unicycles around, and it is a very neat design that encompasses the ethos of what one of these machines should do. It connects with a smartphone app so you can keep an eye on your speed and charging parameters, and set other driving levels while you’re at it, is easy and comfortable to ride, and is amazingly compact and light to carry around with a nice handle that extends for ease of transport.

This one is controlled by the usual fore and aft body movements, and like many of these is also suitable for a modicum of off-road fun, although it is advised you know how to handle one before you try anything adventurous. Like a number of those on the list it does not come with handlebars – although they can be bought as an optional extra – which is perhaps the most difficult aspect of riding one of these to get used to. You can get up to 20km/h out of this one, which is more than enough, and it comes with LED lights. It’s a good model, simple and standard, and at a sensible price as an entry level device.

Key Features
  • No handlebars
  • 20km/h
  • Fore and aft controls
  • App applicable

10: Airwheel Black Q3

Our final one is another popular model from the Airwheel range, and it’s apt that we’ve come full-circle as this is the brand to look for if you are a beginner. It’s a great design that is very popular, and one with some excellent attributes. Strictly this is not a unicycle, as it has two wheels. However, that is a signature of the Airwheel brand as it has developed this design to make it easier for people to enjoy the experience of riding one of these machines.

The makers say you can learn to ride this one in just 5-minutes, and that it is very simple to ride – made even more so by the side-by-side wheels. It can reach speeds of up to 18km/h – very fast on one of these – and is made from durable materials that will stand the test of time. There’s nothing wrong with this design and it remains a very popular one for many very good reasons – great for beginners.

Key Features
  • Twin-wheels
  • Great stability

That’s our list of 10 best electric unicycles, then, but is there one that suits you? Let’s have a look at a few key features before we give you our verdict.

Features to Look For

Here’s a quick run-down of the important features you need to consider when looking at an electric monowheel:

  • Beginner or Experienced – there’s no point shelling out top money for a sophisticated machine if you don’t have the experience; start with a more basic model, and they are just as much fun!
  • One or Two Wheels – some of these – notably the models from Airwheel – use two wheels side-by-side and are strictly, then, not unicycles. However, this layout is much easier to ride than the single-wheel design, especially for learners.
  • Power – you need a suitably powerful motor to get you to a sensible speed; top speed of these ranges from around 7km/h to more than 20km/h – the latter is only for the brave of heart!
  • Range – how far do you want to go? If you just want to mess around and have fun, there are some on the list that offer less range at a lower price; if you want serious range, one or two can take you up to 50km on one charge.
  • Controls – the controls of these differ; some are fore and aft body movement controlled, others are app-compatible with your smartphone – the choice is yours!

So, you know what to look for, and we’ve shown you the ten best on the market, now which is for you? All we need to do is wrap things up!

How It Works

Let’s be honest: you were never thinking about an electric unicycle for practical purposes, were you? You’ve probably seen one in a video, or a friend has one, and thought ‘that looks like great fun’! You’re right, they are great fun, and there are many different makes, models, styles and types to choose from.

When you look through those on our list you’ll also notice different levels of performance, plus some have seats while others you stand. There are models that are very sophisticated, some that are more basic, and others that offer innovations such as Bluetooth compatibility (we must admit we wonder why this is useful, but it sounds good) and that can be controlled by how you move your body.

The electric unicycle can be thought of, in some ways, as a single wheeled, more capable and innovative Segway – those strange platform and handlebar machines that are used by police forces in some cities, and to take tourists on trips around the sights. Intended to be a revolution in city commuting, they never really took off.

The electric unicycle, then, is a fun and exciting device, but we are reluctant to call it a toy, given the rather high price and level of technology involved in some of these models. There is no doubt they can provide hours of family fun, and as most come with a rechargeable electric motor, you can easily put one of these compact machines in the boot of the car for a family day out.

Don't miss: Stunt scooter

Let’s Wrap It Up!

The model of the best electric unicycle you choose will depend upon what you want it for, and that’s outlined by the features we have listed above. However, we think there are one or two that are worth looking more closely at.

To begin with, there is no doubt that the most advanced sophisticated and capable of the models on the list is number 6, the Wheelo model. It offers amazing range, a fabulous variety of excellent features, and you can sit down to ride it. It really is a cut above all the others on the list, but as it will cost you as much as four times some of these, you really have to want one.

We can’t get away from the fact that, for beginners and experienced users alike, the Airwheel range offers the best combination of features and value. In fact, we would go as far as saying the Airwheel Q3, which features in three versions on the list, maybe the best buy of the lot.

Offering decent range, good speed, easy controls and high build-quality, this model may not have the fancy features of some, but at the price – which is among the lowest of all we have featured – it makes a lot of sense for beginners and novices alike.

All the best electric unicycles featured here are very impressive, so have a look, try a few, and buy yourself something that will bring you and the family endless fun!
